What is the story about?
Khalinda has an aversion to her mother’s skin color politics. A deceased relative attempts to heal generations of suffering during her visits. In the process, she teaches Khalinda to have compassion for her family.
Where did I write it?
Binghamton, NY, where I currently live.
Where does story take place?
Perceptions takes place in Washington D.C. and the Maryland suburbs around Silver Spring. I used to live in the area close to Silver Spring. The area is vibrant with live music, filmmaking, and an array of people from different backgrounds.
What inspired the story?
Initially, I wanted to write a story about astral projection because I was wanting to learn how to do it for myself. Because I hadn’t done enough practice with trying to consciously project, the story evolved into a visit from Spirit.
Is there anything unique about the story?
Khalinda has two moms. She prefers her bonus mom over her biological. It may not be a unique story today, or even in the DC area where there is a booming LGBTQIA+ community, but I felt that at the time of me writing that it wasn’t a topic talked about very often.
Also, angels, spirit guides and loved ones are real, so are aliens. They are entities that get pushed aside to focus on vampires and werewolves. I wanted to share a story that is common for many people yet gets dismissed.
What was the most difficult part about writing the story?
I had challenges keeping it as a stand-alone. Some of my beta readers wanted me to turn it into a novel. There is room for it.
What do you want readers to get out of the story?
I’d like for readers to think about the spirit world differently. There’s a lot of answers about life on the other side. Healing can happen just from hearing from a loved one from the other side. A lot of people carry guilt or regret over a deceased loved one. Messages remove all that; people are able to move on with their lives.
